Hmmm... When I changed over to MT4 I was able to keep my old design. And then I changed it.
I've updated the design since, but it's still using an old MT3.x Template which I tweaked the crap out of.
It's not that I thought I *had* to lose the old layout, just that I thought it was time for a change.
I thought it was time for a change too, but I decided I'd change when I wanted to, as opposed to because I had to. I wanted to make sure MT4 worked with everything I had before chucking it all in the bin and starting again.
More will be chucked in the bin soon, seeing as I'm really going to have to replace my "modules" with "widgets" or some such crap.
Design is kinda moot anyway. Who nowadays actually visits the site?
